Savannah monitors are found in the grasslands of Central Africa but have adapted well in captivity over the years. The Savannah monitor lizard as a baby are very small but can grow up to 3 to 4 feet including the tail in a matter of a couple of months. They are fast growing lizards and do very well in captivity as long as the proper conditions are met. These lizards can also live 10 to 20 years in captivity as long as they maintain the proper care so you would have no problems having a lizard that is going to be with the you for a long time.
When you’re thing about getting a Savannah monitor you need to consider that there are raised in a group of other family members or hatchlings. It is usually ends up to be a small group of one or two lizards usually male and female. There are times where there are more lizards in the family but most of the time they do well on their own. They are very sociable so you might end up getting two lizards to keep each other happy. The one thing that you do have to remember though is the males usually tend to get very aggressive during the feeding time.

Large cockroaches, snails and earthworms are always free so you should at no problems feeding your lizard and keep him or her healthy.
As in the wild these lizards will consume just about anything but in captivity you need to avoid feeding them any type of meat such as canned cat or dog food. They like to eat smaller meals so feeding them on all periods other day just by throwing a few insects into the cage and let them eat. Also you want to monitor their weight often because they can also start fasting for several months at a time.
In order to make sure that your lizard is going to be completely happy and healthy you need to make sure that their habitat is going to be completely cleaned on a regular schedule. You need to clean the cage every day making sure that you clean up all the feces. Replace the water as soon as it is a day old and make sure that you put some dirt on the bottom of the bucket when you replace the water.
Nobody likes to live in a dirty cage and that is why you need to make sure that you maintain a clean cage for your Savannah monitor otherwise they will start acting out and becoming more aggressive.
