Bearded Dragon

A bearded dragon will make a great pet there are many things that you need to make its enviorment something that they are going to like. You need to make sure they are going to be happy in there new home. before you decide to get a bearded dragon here is a list of supplies you will need. The bearded dragon is a very unique pet. They can grow up to 18 inches but no need to worry most of that is its tail. They will reach that size in about a years time if they are taken care of properly. That means good tank cleaning, the proper food and plenty of exercise. Bearded dragons can live an astonishing 3 to 10 years but this also depends on the care.

Here is a list of materials that you need if you are looking to get a bearded dragon for a pet.

  • a habitat (This is the tank that you are putting them in. You might need to purchase a couple of tanks until they reach thier full size.)
  • All the information that you can find on bearded dragons
  • bearded dragon food (Crickets and a kit to grow your own including the food for the crickets. You also need calcium and vitamin supplements. Mealworms and other treats for the bearded dragon.
  • Sand
  • moss
  • food and water dishes
  • hideaway place (They need a place where they can get out of sight and hide. Sometimes they just want to disappear.)
  • climbing décor (These lizards like most like to climb on things and it is another way for them to get exercise.)
  • plants (They are omnivors so they need a selection of edible plants in their tank.)
  • heat (You will need to heat the tank so you will need a heat light and fixture. You also need somrthing that will heat the entire bottom of the tank. A thermomiter is another thing that you need to monitor the temp and the humidity gauge because this has to be in specific perameters for your bearded dragon.
  • UVB lighting

 

These are some of the things that you need just starting out but more equipment might be needed.

 

Diet

 

When you’re thinking of the diet that your bearded dragon has to consume you want to make sure that is well balanced.  The perfect diet for a bearded dragon consists of 70% of a mixture of insects such as crickets and mealworms and another insects like these.  The other 30% of their diet will consist of a mixture of fruits and vegetables.  You can also purchase commercial food for your bearded dragon through any pet store that sells this type of lizard.

 

Feeding

 

There is a certain procedure that you need to follow when you’re feeding your bearded dragon.  The first thing that you need to do is make sure that they have chlorinefree fresh, and clean water available to them at all times of the day.  Changing their water on a regular basis will ensure that your dragon is going to live a healthy life.  For juvenile lizards you need to feed them every day but when they grow up to be an adult if you need to feed them 3 to 5 times periodically throughout the week.  Most of the time the juveniles will eat more than the adult lizards because the adults have adapted more to eat the vegetation around them.  When it comes to applying the supplement sprinkle all the multi-vitamin and the calcium supplements on their food twice a week.  Once you feed your bearded dragon you need to make sure that you clean out any fruits and vegetables that have been left in the habitat more than 24 hours.

 

Housing

 

When it comes to figuring out what size of the habitat that you need you need to consider the overall size of your bearded dragon.  In order to the housing complex that they need will all depend on how much your lizard grows.  This will depend on how much you feed them and the overall care because they will grow at different rates and sizes so you’re going to have to accommodate them until they stop growing.  This means you could be changing your habitat several times during the year.

 

When you’re trying to construct the perfect habitat for your bearded raking you need to make sure that they have plenty of places to hide.  Making a place out of baskets and different branches will give them the place that they need to hide and you’ll have to keep less than 50% moisture in their habitat.  This means you’re going to have to find different plans that can deal with low humidity in order for your bearded dragon to survive.

 

Also in the habitat you’ll need to maintain a calcium pacing and or silica sand.  This sand is otherwise known as playground sand which you can find at any Home Depot or home department store.  The reason why use this and because sometimes a lizard eat it and you also want to make sure that you have a repti-carpet so they can move back to the different textures.

 

Temperatures another big issue that you have to worry about when you’re dealing withe bearded dragons.  At one end of habitat you need to make sure that it stays at least 100° F at all times and the other and can be no colder thin 70° F.  This is why it is recommended to use a radiant heat lamp as your primary source of heat.

 

As far as lighting goes you need a UVB lamp because it has the full spectrum of light that the bearded dragon requires.  They need at least 10 to 12 hours of direct sunlight so they can bask in the daylights on at all hours of the day.

 

You never want to mix species of lizards and the bearded rating is no different from any other lizard that you might find.  The adults need to be in their own separate habitat and never be mixed together under any circumstance.

 

Warning signs

 

Bearded dragons can get sick and can be treated as long as you know what to look for in text the disease early that they might have.  Hear some things that you want to pay close attention to or early warning signs that may suggest that you’re dragon is sick and needs medical attention.  The first thing to look for is an abnormal appetite.  You’ll be able to see how much food they have been eating because you are the one feeding them.  You also want to be well aware of any swelling or bumps are sores on the skin.  If there are has been a buildup of mucus around the mouth or nose or is having problems breathing you need to see the veterinarian quickly about your bearded dragon.
